I purchased this setting from American Set on ebay
stores.ebay.com/American-Set

for what you get, its a great basic casted ring. I chose this to go with my 6/4 round sphene titanite. the prongs as you can see, are heavy. very much so. My jeweler had to cut the prongs in order to not crush the stone.

and then he banned me from ever bringing sphene to him again...lol.

RCA Building

RCA Building

Midtown Manhattan, New York City, New York, United States

Nearly 300 men began excavation of the RCA Building in July 1.931..Steelwork commenced early the next year and the building was completed thirteen months later. Its architectural design was the result of several conditioning factors. On the most rudimentary level was the accommodation of varied tenant requirements and the maximum utilization of available land. "he solution was the combination of three different buildings into a single structure (more than 1,000 feet lonq) whicn spans the full block between Rockefeller Plaza and Sixth Avenue. On the east, taking full advantage of light and air, are the 70-story corporate offices of RCA. Additional office space was provided along Sixth Avenue in the sixteen story slab of the RCA Building West. The midblock section, much less desirable for office space, was allotted to NBC's broadcasting studios which needed no windows but only large amounts of layered horizontal space. The technical specifications of this unit were particularly exacting. In order to insure soundproofing all the studios were designed with "floating" wails, floors and ceilings, suspended and insulated from the building's structural frame.

Among the other factors that conditioned RCA's design were the New York building Code and the introduction of new elevators whose high speed reduced the number required for building service. Equally important were the developer's demand for profitable return and the unwavering functionalism of the Associated Architects, tempered by a touch of romance from Raymond Hood. because of the size of the site and the Associated Architects' plan to build low-rise Fifth Avenue units backed by an open plaza, they had considerable freedom in determining the mass of their tower.

They were encouraged by John B. Todd 'who was concerned that the air rights (which were not transferable to the north or south blocks) be utilized to their full potential. At length the architects designed a 70-story tower whose facade rises sheer for 33 stories before expressing the elimination of three elevator banks with gentle setbacks. The tower stood in marked contrast to most contemporaneous skyscrapers where zoning setbacks created a wedding cake effect. The RCA Building thus stands as an early example of the emerging architectural slab. The form would be more completely —although not totally — realized at Rockefeller Center with construction of the One Rockefeller Plaza (formerly Time-Life) Building in 10 37 and the Ten Rockefeller Plaza (formerly Eastern Airlines Building in 1938-39, both of which sat on plinths related to pedestrian scale.

Slabs had been periodically proposed since 1912, but rarely executed.[5] They were approached recently, and most significantly, by Raymond Hood for the Daily News 1930 and and McGraw-Hill (1931) buildings, both of which are designated New York City Landmarks. Ironically, it was Hood who lobbied most forcefully for stylistically regressive setbacks on the RCA.

In keeping with his intention to build prime quality business space, developer John R. Todd insisted that no office be more than 27 1/2 feet from a window (the maximum at which virtural light and air can be adequately provided). By contrast, many contemporaneous office structures were built to maximum girth leaving dark and unventilated spaces at their cores.

The Associated Architects responded to Todd's requirement by grouping high speed elevators into central banks and surrounding them on each floor with a corridor and ring of offices of the requires 27-1/2 foot depth. It totally outmoded the wedding cake arrangement where elevators were grouped on either side of a long central corridor, forced deep into the building by the zoning regulations which required towers (and therefore the elevators which serviced those towers) to be set back from the street. The arrangement at RCA provided more than two million square feet, of prime office space, distinguishing it for years as the world's largest office building in floor area.

The pure geometry of RCA's functional slab was paradoxically disturbed by Hood's desire to give it full rational expression. After heated controversy among the Associated Architects, he finally succeeded in introducing setbacks at each point of elevator elimination, or, as Hood said, "cut[ting] out all the bad space and let[ting] the building stand on its own.

The progressive narrowing of building mass maintained the 27-1/2 foot relationship of office to building core and clearly expressed the reduced number of elevator shafts required for the upper floors (42 at ground level narrowing to ten on the 53rd floor). Honest functionalist expressions on both the north and south sides of the RCA Building, the setbacks are pure romance on its east facade where their primary function is to dramatize the soaring 850 foot tapered shaft. This quality is exaggerated when the building is viewed, as it inva

Remembrance Day/Harry Stone (Hearts of Coal)

Remembrance Day/Harry Stone (Hearts of Coal)

There is a pithead far away without a winding gear
And there they crucified the pit
And all the jobs round here

So dearly, dearly we need jobs to earn our daily bread
The right to work is all we claim
To keep our families fed

There is a green hill far away that used to be a pit
But now it's just a grassy bank
Where picnic parties sit

And deep beneath their quiche lorraine the ghosts of miners sing
The politics of selfish gain
Has ruined everything

Harry Stone was a miner born who worked to win his wages
Riding down the cages and raging at the seams
He worked his stall from dusk 'til dawn
Sweet sweat and raw endeavour
Black diamonds bound together
By strong and simple means

He met a girl from lronville and he promised he would love her
He would put no-one above her - at last they went to town
He promised he would love her
'Till the blackbirds stopped their singing
The mission bell stopped ringing
And they closed the coalpit down

Where are you tonight now we need you?
Left out in the cold - cold
Where are you tonight now we need you?
They broke the hearts of coal - hearts of coal
They raised their children chapeI-proud the lamb and flag to guide them
They each strove to provide them with a sense of right from wrong
And when the strikes and lock-outs came
And barefoot hunger tried them
When all hopes were denied them
Their unity held strong

Forty years of coal dust is a lot of pain to carry - it made a cripple out of Harry
But his family came and took up his tools
And they faced the Orgreave Cavalry
While the world looked on and wondered
Their right to work was plundered
By the statesmanship of fools

The "Enemy Within" they cried and the boney finger pointed
Dripping gold from the annointed at the beggar and her bowl
And just like the Union said he would
The axeman came in dancing
His psychopathic prancing
Chopped out the hearts of coal

Where are you tonight now we need you
Left out in the cold - cold
Where are you tonight now we need you
They broke the hearts of coal - hearts of coal

And he promised he would love her
'Til the blackbirds stopped their singing
The mission bell stopped ringing
And they closed the coalpits down

Caligula and Divus Augustus. 37-41 AD. Denarius, 3.71g. (3h). Lugdunum, 41 AD. Obv: C CAESAR AVG GERM PON M TR POT IIII COS IIII Laureate head of Caligula right. Rx: GERMANICVS CAES P C CAES AVG GERM Bare head of Germanicus right. Reverse type apparently unlisted for this issue.

Extremely rare denarius of Caligula's fourth consulship, which only lasted from 1 January 41 until his assassination on 24 January, and with a new reverse type for the issue. Giard, Lyon (1983), p. 145, knew no aurei of Caligula at all dated COS IIII, and only four denarii, one in Oxford with reverse Divus Augustus, two in Vienna and Mazzini with reverse Agrippina I, and one in a Bourgey sale of 1913 with reverse SPQR P P OB C S in oak wreath. BM 32 may be a second denarius with this last reverse type, but the reading of the dates in the obverse legend requires confirmation. Our Germanicus reverse type, previously unknown, thus completes the expected set of four denarius reverse types for Caligula's final issue of January 41. The obverse die of our denarius appears to be different from those of BM 32 and the four coins reported by Giard.

Unique. A marvelleous coin of great beauty and importance,
bearing a beautiful portait of Constantius Chlorus.

Struck on a broad flan in high relief, area of weakness on reverse,
otherwise about extremely fine

Ex J. Schulman, private sale to J. W. Garrett, October 1923 and NFA-Leu, The John W. Garrett collection, 1984, 918. and Spink 13.4.2000, The Dr. Anton C. R. Dreesmann Collection of Ancient Coins, 93 sales. From the Arras hoard.

The rendering of Hercules-emperor on this five-aureus medallion from the famous Arras Hoard is noticeably different than that on the eight-aureus piece of Maximian (lot 244). Though both medallions were struck at the western mint of Trier, this one predates the other by at least seven years, which explains the stylistic differences. Constantius I 'Chlorus' ("the pale" - a surname applied posthumously) was hailed Caesar in March, 293 along with Galerius; it was at this moment the Tetrarchy - the rule of four - was founded. But it was not for folly: the empire was under siege on many fronts, and Diocletian and Maximian agreed that two rulers were not sufficient to deal with the threats, real and potential, that faced the empire. Constantius, then in his early or mid-forties, was immediately put to work on the task of recovering Britain and the much of the Gallic coast from the usurper Carausius, who six or seven years ago had founded the Romano-British Empire. An earlier attempt by Maximian in 288 or 289 to oust Carausius never materialized, and now that he could delegate the task to his new Caesar, Maximian thought the time right to make a fresh attempt. From the outset the campaign was a success, and Constantius managed to expel Carausius from his Gallic seaports and at the same time began construction of a fleet for the anticipated invasion of Britain. When Caraiusius finally abandoned his struggle to maintain bases on the continent, he sailed back to Britain and was murdered by his minister Allectus. The crafty minister succeeded his victim as 'Augustus' in Britain, and it was he who suffered the fatal consequences of Constantius' naval expedition. With the defeat of Allectus, Britain returned to Roman hands. Such a victory would be the crowning glory at the end of a reign, but Constantius earned it early in his career. Not surprisingly, a series of commemorative gold medallions were struck in honor of this monumental victory, which had made the empire whole again. Among them was this piece, which eventually was buried as part of the famous Arras Treasure. Constantius is shown wearing the scalp of the Nemean lion, a reference to the Greco-Roman hero Hercules. This was appropriate not only because of the Herculian task the new Caesar had undertaken, but more directly because he was Caesar under Maximian, whose patron was Hercules. The style of the image is more formal than that on the medallion of Maximian listed earlier in the sale, and the hair and beard of Constantius are considerably more pronounced. The reverse is somewhat anachronistic, recalling earlier types of Aurelian and other soldier-emperors. Its inscription, "to mars the victor," is appropriate both to the type of Mars advancing, and to the military victory it commemorates.
